I love fried dough. Donuts. Beignets. Churros. Malasadas. Andagi. I love it all. So on our latest trip to Kona, I made sure we stopped at Holy Donuts.
Oh. Mah. Gah. The donuts were as big as my youngest daughter’s face. Glazed, filled, sprinkled, glittered, meringued. They had it all. Also, the donuts are fried in small batches every hour, so you’re practically guaranteed to get a freshly made donut every single time.
We got four specialty donuts: chocolate covered with sprinkles and glitter and filled with buttercream frosting, circus animal cookie, maple bacon, and lilikoi (passion fruit) filled with a torched meringue top. I’m not sure how often this is offered, but since we bought four donuts, we got two malasadas for free. They were square shaped and quite fluffy. Reminiscent of the malasadas from Tex Drive In.
The prices ranged from $3.50-$5.50 per donut, which I admit might seem a little high for a donut, but they were all delicious. Perfect for a Treat Yo Self day.
Holy Donuts is located just off Ali’i Drive in Kona. Free parking in the area is a little hard to come by but there is a paid parking lot in front of the store.
If you’re planning a trip to the Big Island, I highly recommend stopping at Holy Donuts for a sweet snack. The staff is super friendly and the donuts are worth every single calorie.
