Sayonara Store Bought Salsa

When I was younger, we didn’t eat a lot of Mexican food. Sure, we ate tacos occasionally but that’s about it. And just in case you were wondering, Taco Bell DOES NOT count as Mexican food. Over the past couple of years, I have actually tried making my own Mexican inspired dishes and they have turned out pretty good. This past week I even tried to make my own salsa. The verdict? I will probably never buy salsa from the store again.

The key to a good salsa? Fresh ingredients. They will make your food taste leaps and bounds better. Now, I know that some salsa recipes call for canned ingredients and that’s totally fine. I would probably just be mindful of the salt in the canned ingredients so that when you go to make your salsa you don’t over salt it.

What is your favorite Mexican food?

Pepe the King Prawn’s Salsa


  • 2 medium tomatoes, seeded and diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, seeded, stemmed, and diced
  • ½ medium onion, diced
  • ½ tablespoon jalapeno peppers, seeded and diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • ½ cup cilantro, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • A few dashes of hot sauce (optional)


  1. Put all ingredients in a food processor fitted with a blade.
  2. Process until desired consistency.
  3. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

    Thank you, another person from Hawaii who doesn’t think Taco Bell is Mexican (unlike some people I know *cough cough* lol.) I love Mexican food, and I especially love the Mexican up here, if you can imagine. 😮

    The salsa looks really good! I found a pico de gallo recipe last year and it was a hit. There’s nothing like fresh salsa and chips!
