It’s NOT Made in Chernobyl

Happy 4th of July!  Hope you guys are partying like it’s 1776. And what says celebrating the birth of a nation better than…SPAM? Okay, you can stop pretending to gag. Spam is actually quite popular here in Hawaii. They even serve it at McDonald’s for breakfast.

One of my favorite ways to eat Spam is fried, with a shoyu (soy sauce) and sugar glaze. If you’ve never tried Spam before, try it this way.


 You CAN buy it at the Mobil.


 It doesn’t look that bad, right?


My preferred brand of shoyu.


 Feel free to use a sugar substitute such as Splenda.


 Simmering away.


And there you go. Spam’s not so scary now, is it?

Shoyu Sugar Spam


  • 1 can of SPAM
  • ½ cup shoyu (soy sauce)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar


  1. Cut spam into 8-10 slices.
  2. Cook Spam over medium heat until desired crispness. I usually cook it about 4 minutes per side.
  3. While Spam is cooking, whisk together shoyu and sugar until sugar has dissolved.
  4. When Spam is finished cooking, remove from pan and place on towel lined plate. Turn heat down to low and add shoyu sugar mixture. Add Spam pieces back to the pan and simmer for about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. When done, remove from pan. Eat with rice or fried noodles.

  1. I also add mirin along with sugar and shoyu …not sure if could add on to the taste but that’s what I was taught.
