Fun Workout, No Longer an Oxymoron

All my life I had always avoided exercising and working out. Although I knew that the health benefits were great, I had neither the motivation nor the desire to do it.  Organized sports? Ha, yeah right. The only running I might have done would probably have been because I was trying to catch up with the ice cream man. When the Nintendo Wii came out, I tried to do some of the fitness games and they were fun… for like two weeks. Then I got bored and lazy. This seemed to be the case whenever I attempted anything related to exercising. Pilates, walking with my husband and dog, yoga… And then I tried something completely different. I took a zumba class.

My mom had been taking zumba classes for a while and the only reason I was mildly interested was because of the buzz that was surrounding it. People of all shapes, sizes, ages and fitness levels were loving this new craze. So this past January I went to my first zumba class with my mom. Although I had no idea what I was doing and I kept getting lost with the choreography, it was the most fun I had exercising. Ever. For those who don’t know what zumba is, I like to call it part aerobics class and part dance class. It fuses Latin, hip hop, and even Bollywood dance moves with more traditional aerobics movements that help strengthen and tone your body.  And guys, don’t be be afraid to try zumba just because the majority of the classes consist of women. I have seen some pretty big (muscle wise) guys take zumba and sometimes even they have a hard time keeping up with the instructor.  I currently go to hour long zumba classes twice a week and am always sad if I have to miss one.

I’m really glad I decided to go to that first zumba class. It’s a great stress reliever and it’s actually the only time I ever get to do something completely for myself. If you’ve ever had doubts about zumba, just try one class and see if you like it. One of my instructors always tells us that her husband says, “At zumba you pay for the party and the fitness is free.” Believe me, he is absolutely right.
